Privacy Policy

Traffic Predict has no accounts, sign-ups or forms: you can use every part of it without telling us who you are. This page explains what is collected when you visit, by us and by the Google services the site uses, and the choices you have.

The short version

• We don't ask for your name, email address or any other personal details, and we don't sell personal information.
• Google Analytics measures how the site is used, and Google AdSense shows the ads that pay for it. Both use cookies.
• When you open the map, an approximate location for your internet (IP) address is looked up so the map can start near you. Your precise location is used only if you press the locate button, and it stays in your browser.
• Our web server keeps standard logs of page requests.

Information collected automatically

Server logs

Like almost every website, our server records each request: your IP address, the date and time, the page or file requested, the page that linked to it, and your browser's description of itself (its "user agent"). We use these logs to keep the site running, to stop abuse such as aggressive crawlers, and to count visits. Monthly archives are kept on the server so we can see how the site's traffic changes over time. We don't use them to identify individual visitors.

Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics to understand which pages people use, how they find the site, and what kind of device they use. Google Analytics sets cookies and collects information such as the pages you view, how long you stay, your approximate location (city level, from your IP address), and your device and browser. We see this only as totals and trends, never tied to your name. Learn more in how Google uses information from sites that use its services. Advertising (Google AdSense)

The site is free because it shows ads from Google AdSense. Google and its partners use cookies and similar technologies to show ads, to limit how often you see the same ad, to measure ads, and to prevent fraud. Ads may be personalized based on your visits to this and other websites. We don't choose which individual ads you see, and we don't receive personal information about you from Google.

• Turn off personalized ads from Google in Google's Ad Settings, or learn how Google uses cookies in advertising.
• Opt out of personalized ads from many other companies at optout.aboutads.info (US) or youronlinechoices.eu (Europe).
• Visitors from the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland are asked for consent by Google's consent message before personalized ads are shown.

Your location

When you open the map without a link to a specific place, your browser asks GeoJS, a free service, for an approximate location for your IP address (roughly your city). The map uses it to start near you, or to tell you if we don't cover your area yet. The result stays in your browser and isn't stored by us. If the lookup fails, the map uses your browser's time zone instead.

The locate button (the target icon on the map) uses your device's precise location, and only after you press it and your browser asks your permission. It is used in your browser to center the map and is never sent to us.

Settings saved in your browser

The site remembers a few choices in your browser's own storage, not in a cookie and not on our server: your language (English or Español), how the map is colored, whether incidents are shown, and (until you close the tab) that you closed the ad bar on a phone. You can clear them at any time by clearing this site's data in your browser.

Other services the site loads

To draw the map, your browser downloads map tiles from OpenFreeMap. Like any website, those servers see your IP address when they send the tiles. The traffic data itself comes from our own server.

Your choices and rights

• Block or delete cookies in your browser's settings. The map and every page still work without them.
• Use the Google opt-outs above for analytics and personalized ads.
• California residents: we don't sell personal information. Showing personalized ads can count as "sharing" personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising under California law; you can opt out with Google's Ad Settings and the opt-out tools above. You may also ask what personal information we hold about you, or ask us to delete it. Since we don't collect names or accounts, this is usually limited to server log entries for your IP address.
• Wherever you live, you can contact us with any privacy question or request.

Children

Traffic Predict is a general-audience site and isn't directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children.

Security

The whole site is served over encrypted HTTPS. Server logs are kept on our server and are not shared, except as needed to run the site or as required by law.

Changes to this policy

If what the site collects changes, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
